For the first half, I couldn’t figure out what Ashley Winstead was trying to do. I felt like I was reading several different books. Scout and Isabel are looking for justice for Georgia. Grey is investigating her sister’s murder from years ago. Then there are dissertation excerpts that seem to come out of nowhere.
I honestly thought this was headed for a two-star review. Then I could finally see how it was all going to come together, which had me ripping through the pages.  The separate storylines were really threads that made a whole blanket, but I was only seeing threads for the longest time.

My biggest complaint is that this was marketed as a thriller, and somehow it made me cry. By the end, I wasn’t thinking about the mystery nearly as much as I was thinking about grief, chosen family, and what people will do to protect the women they love.


For most of the book I thought it would make a great miniseries. I can really see the TV version of this and it would be five stars. With the multiple storylines and different perspectives it’s already built for it. Read it before they make the show. I’m writing it now into existence.
