My Thoughts

He was her whole world. He wanted to be in the world.
That is this entire memoir in two sentences.
Stefan Merrill Block was nine when his mother pulled him out of school, claiming his teachers were stifling his creativity. What followed was not an unconventional education so much as a childhood defined by isolation. The homeschooling isn’t really the point. It’s simply the way his mother’s need to keep him close reshaped every part of his life.
What makes this memoir so effective is that Block never writes with bitterness. His mother isn’t reduced to a villain. She’s a complicated woman carrying her own wounds, whose love became something that left little room for her son to become his own person. That perspective gives the book an honesty that’s uncomfortable without feeling accusatory.
I listened to the audiobook, and I couldn’t stop. Block narrates it himself, and hearing him tell his own story adds a level of intimacy that would be difficult to capture any other way. I finished it in a single day.
My only complaint is that I wanted more from his father and brother. They’re present throughout the memoir, but I kept wondering what those same years looked like from their perspective.
This is an emotionally heavy memoir, but it never feels sensationalized. It simply asks what happens when love and control become impossible to separate.
