When I finished this book, I immediately thought this is now my favorite trad wife book I’ve read. But OMG, do not read it in the dark. Don’t read it alone at a farmhouse. Don’t read it if you happen to be a canceled journalist who might have a freelance gig to interview a trad wife in her home. And for sure don’t do it if you are going to stay there for a week.

This book had me from page one. I was invested in Jenny’s descent from a viral story to being desperate for a job. I wanted to know what made Mia Wright have so many followers. There is a larger critique here of women who prey on other women, but you need to get to the last part of the book to realize just how bad it could be.

The first half of the book is a slow buildup of the horrors that you know will be coming. Jenny knows something isn’t right in the house, but she hasn’t caught on to exactly what. Mia seems too good to be true, and as things escalate, Jenny gets further and further invested. As she does, she also starts to think maybe her memory isn’t right.

By the time she decides to run, in typical horror fashion, it’s a smidge too late.

Overall, I loved the entire book. I was glad it was more suspenseful with a side of horror elements so that I could, in fact, sleep at night. But I do need to go back and read some of Sarah Langan’s earlier work because this was amazing.
