Libby and Carter have been best friends for 15 years. During that time, Libby has loved Carter. It reminded me a little of Love Actually and Sarah’s love for Karl. On the night of Carter’s engagement party, Libby comes across Trip in the library. Trip wants to enlist her help in breaking the family curse.

In the Coldwell family, all the men are killed by taxis. I love how specific that is because even when they aren’t somewhere you would expect to find taxis, somehow the taxi will in fact find them.

This book has a few things going for it. First, it has a great opening line: “I was sixteen when I learned how my best friend would die.”

It also has some great relationships. Libby and her grandmother, Libby and Zuri, Libby and Sabrina. Yes, Libby is the center of all of them. The story is told from her perspective. But I liked that even though she claims to live this boring life, she actually has all these connections out there in the world.

Then there’s the Trip and Libby storyline.

Trip is alive, but he’s in a coma. Libby doesn’t realize until Trip that she can see ghosts. I always find the ghost or spirit aspect interesting. It feels like it would be a cool ability, but also you probably look nuts talking to yourself on the street. I thought they could have played with that comedy a little more, but overall I thought the author did a good job with it.

Carter’s character was pretty one-dimensional, but I think that might have been intentional. In life, he’s the person doing what he’s told. He doesn’t exactly make his own choices, so he never really feels like his own person. I felt that throughout the book.

While Carter is doing what everyone expects, Libby is figuring out who she could be.

One of my favorite ideas in the book is that we make our own fairytales. And I personally hope we all do.
